The Battle of Poltava in 1709

The Poltava region played an important role in the history of the Ukrainian people. The Poltava Battle is an outstanding battle during the great Northern war between the armies of Charles XII and Peter I and it took place on June 27 – July 8, 1709 near Poltava. In the Battle of Poltava in 1709 the Swedes lost about 10 thousand men killed and wounded. Today, at the site where the battle took place, there is a State Cultural Heritage Preserve Complex, known as “Poltava battle Field” and many monuments and churches commemorating the battle, including many Poltava Art Museums.

Poltava Region

Poltava is a city in south central Ukraine, and the actual population of Poltava Ukraine is about 292.000. The number of towns situated in the Poltava Region is equal to 15.
